Configuring Exclusion Reasons

The first step in the Screening process is configuring the Exclusion reasons. There are two ways to exclude studies: Automatically and Manually.

Steps for Configuring Exclusion Reasons:

Once you are in a nest, hover over the Nest menu and click on “Configure Exclusion Reasons”.

2. Inspect the Exclusion Reasons Page

“Configure Exclusion Reasons” will bring you to a page that looks similar to this

If someone has already set Auto or Manual Exclusion reasons, they will appear here.

Part A: 1A -> Configure Auto Exclusion Reasons

Auto Exclusion is used only for exclusion reasons that the software can filter out automatically. These reasons are:

- Publication Date

Adding a publication date exclusion will remove studies from your nest that were published before or after the date you choose.

- Title

Adding a title exclusion will remove studies from your nest that contain a specified keyword, such as “Case Series”

- Language

Adding a language exclusion will remove studies from your nest that were not published in English.

2A. Run Auto Exclusion

From the studies that were initially ingested into your nest from the lit search, Auto Exclusion has now excluded from your nest any studies that were published before 11/01/2019, any studies with the word “protocol” in the title, and any study not published in English.

Part B: 1B -> Configure Manual Exclusion Reasons

Manual Exclusion reasons are reasons you set and can include any number of reasons based on the aim of the nest

2B. Add an Exclusion Reason

By clicking “Add Manual Exclusion”, you can add any reason for exclusion based on the aim of the Nest.

Deleting an exclusion reason will permanently remove it from the system and will also remove it from studies to which it has been applied. These studies will be returned to the screening queue and will need to be screened again.

Useful Information

  • Adding Exclusions Reasons
    • You can always (and should) add Exclusions Reasons as you screen. You can look to other nests to get a sense of helpful Exclusions Reasons.
  • Editing Exclusions Reasons
    • If you want to change/edit the wording of an exclusion reason, click on the edit (pencil) button next to each reason. Editing the wording will automatically change the wording on all studies to which that exclusion reason has been applied.
